BIG BROTHER/SISTER IS WATCHING YOU!

Like Orwell's novel 1984, the jazz opera 1984.2.0 describes a not too distant future. Building on Orwell's characters and based on the structure of the novel, the piece tells a dystopian vision of a totalitarian surveillance state.

An artificial intelligence (AI) is used to monitor humanity, which has almost completely destroyed planet Earth. With the help of AI, it is hoped that humans and nature will finally be able to live in harmony, both mentally and physically.

"For his third opera, Christian Klinkenberg adapts Orwell's classic "1984", which author and director Ela Baumann transports to a near future controlled by an AI. Klinkenberg's play with microtonality and a score streamed graphically on laptops is sophisticated, cerebral and fun at the same time - and is skilfully embedded in the esprit of Orwell's dystopia thanks to Baumann's ability to oscillate almost effortlessly between humour and horror."(Schinker Jeff: Neustart, Neusprech, Neudenk, in: Tageblatt, 21.06.2023, S.12.)
