You can't have everything. A travelling soldier makes a pact with the devil by swapping his violin with him. But while this alliance initially gives him a semblance of happiness, the one who dances with the devil is condemned to a slow descent into hell.
The piece was conceived by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky and the Swiss author Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz based on a collection of Russian fairy tales by Alexander Afanasiasiev for a small travelling theatre during the First World War. An avant-garde composition characterised by an incredibly complex rhythmisation of language, music and plot.
